Wes's tip

Weather and "ago"

For the weather, Spanish uses hace: hace calor (it's hot), hace sol (it's sunny), hace buen tiempo (the weather is nice). And hace + time means "ago": llegué hace una hora (I arrived an hour ago).

Frequently asked questions about hacer

Is hacer regular or irregular?

Hacer is irregular: hago (present yo), hice / hizo (preterite), haré (future), haga (subjunctive) and the participle hecho. Only the imperfect (hacía) and the gerund (haciendo) are regular.

How do you conjugate hacer in the present tense?

hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen.

How do you conjugate hacer in the preterite?

hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron.

Why is it "hizo" and not "hico"?

Spelling only: c before o would sound like a k, so Spanish writes z to keep the "th/s" sound: hizo.

How do you say "it's cold" or "it's hot" in Spanish?

With hacer: hace frío (it's cold), hace calor (it's hot), hace viento (it's windy).

What is the past participle of hacer?

The past participle is irregular: hecho (he hecho, I have done). The gerund is haciendo.
