Counting to 100 in Spanish

In part 1 you learned 1 to 10, and in part 2 11 to 25. Today we go all the way up to 100! Don’t worry: we’re not going through every single number. Once you know the tens and one simple pattern, you can count to 100 on your own.

Quick: 26 to 29

First, let’s finish the twenties. Same pattern as 21 to 25: veinti + the number.

veintiséis 26

veintisiete 27

veintiocho 28

veintinueve 29

The tens: 30 to 100

NumberSpanishComes from
30treintatres (3)
40cuarentacuatro (4)
50cincuentacinco (5)
60sesentaseis (6)
70setentasiete (7)
80ochentaocho (8)
90noventanueve (9)
100cien

See the pattern? Most tens look like the number 1 to 9, plus -enta (or -inta for 30). Siete → setenta, ocho → ochenta, nueve → noventa.

(Wes’s tip)

Be careful with sesenta (60) and setenta (70): they sound very similar! Think: sesenta has the s from seis, setenta has the t from siete.

The pattern: tens + y + number

From 31 on, numbers are written as three words: the ten, then y (and), then the number. Literally “thirty and one”.

treinta y uno 31

treinta y dos 32

cuarenta y tres 43

cincuenta y cinco 55

sesenta y seis 66

setenta y siete 77

ochenta y ocho 88

noventa y nueve 99

That’s different from 16 to 29, which are written as one word (dieciséis, veintiuno). From 30 on, it’s always separate words with y.

Using the numbers

Tengo treinta y cinco años. I’m 35 years old.

Son cuarenta euros. It’s 40 euros.

Hay cien personas. There are 100 people.

Remember: for your age, Spanish uses tener: “I have 35 years”.

Frequently asked questions

Is it “cien” or “ciento”?

Exactly 100 is cien. But from 101 on, it becomes ciento: ciento uno (101), ciento cincuenta (150). More about that in the next numbers lesson.

What does “cien por cien” mean?

“One hundred percent”: totally, completely. You’ll also hear cien por ciento.

Hi! I'm Wes, a Dutchie 🇳🇱 who has been living in Spain 🇪🇸 for the past few years. Just like you, I had to learn Spanish from scratch, and I searched countless places for the right info.

After filling two notebooks with words, grammar rules and notes, I figured all of this could help other learners too. That's why I created this website: to help you learn Spanish in an easy and effective way, one step at a time.

My courses focus on the Spanish spoken both in Spain 🇪🇸 as well as Latin America 🌎
