Dar: to give

Another yellow verb lesson! Today’s verb is dar, which means to give. It’s short, it’s simple, and you’ll use it all the time.

As always: copy the table into your notebook and fill it in yourself.

Dar conjugation: present tense

PronounDarEnglish
yodoyI give
túdasyou give
él / ella / usteddahe / she gives, you (formal) give
nosotros / nosotrasdamoswe give
vosotros / vosotrasdaisyou all give (Spain)
ustedesdanyou all give
ellos / ellasdanthey give

Yo doy: I give

Yo doy el regalo. I give the gift.

Doy ends in -oy, just like voy (I go), estoy (I am) and soy (I am). That’s the only irregular form of dar.

Tú das: you give

Tú me das el dinero. You give me the money.

Literally “you to me give the money”. Just like lo in lesson 43, the little word me (to me) goes before the verb.

Él / ella / usted da: he / she gives, you (formal) give

Él da solo lo mejor. He only gives the best.

¿Ella da solo lo mejor? Does she only give the best?

Usted da solo lo mejor. You (formal) only give the best.

Lo mejor means “the best”. Remember lo mismo (the same thing)? Same idea: lo + a describing word.

Nosotros / nosotras damos: we give

Nosotros damos mucho. We give a lot.

No damos mucho. We don’t give much.

And as always, no goes right before the verb (lesson 51).

Vosotros / vosotras dais: you all give (Spain)

Vosotros me dais confianza. You all give me confidence.

Notice: dais has no tilde. Just like veis from ver, it’s only one syllable.

Ustedes dan: you all give

Ustedes le dan el ejemplo. You all give him the example.

Le = to him / to her. We’ll learn more about these little words (me, te, le…) in a later lesson.

Ellos / ellas dan: they give

Ellos dan su opinión. They give their opinion.

Ellas dan su opinión. They give their opinion. (all women)

Opinión is easy to recognize, just watch the tilde on the ó.

Dame: give me

¡Dame el libro! Give me the book!

Dame un momento. Give me a moment.

Dame is the command “give me”: da (give) + me (me). You’ll hear it a lot.

(Wes’s tip)

Don’t mix up dame and dime! Dame (give me) comes from dar. Dime (tell me) comes from decir.

Hi! I'm Wes, a Dutchie 🇳🇱 who has been living in Spain 🇪🇸 for the past few years. Just like you, I had to learn Spanish from scratch, and I searched countless places for the right info.

After filling two notebooks with words, grammar rules and notes, I figured all of this could help other learners too. That's why I created this website: to help you learn Spanish in an easy and effective way, one step at a time.

My courses focus on the Spanish spoken both in Spain 🇪🇸 as well as Latin America 🌎
