Ver: to see
Another yellow verb lesson! Today’s verb is ver, which means to see. It’s also how you say “to watch” in Spanish, so you’ll use it a lot.
As always: copy the table into your notebook and fill it in yourself.
Ver conjugation: present tense
| Pronoun | Ver | English |
|---|---|---|
| yo | veo | I see |
| tú | ves | you see |
| él / ella / usted | ve | he / she sees, you (formal) see |
| nosotros / nosotras | vemos | we see |
| vosotros / vosotras | veis | you all see (Spain) |
| ustedes | ven | you all see |
| ellos / ellas | ven | they see |
Yo veo: I see
Yo veo el barco. I see the boat.
Tú ves: you see
Tú ves oportunidades. You see opportunities.
Lots of words ending in -dad are easy to guess: oportunidad (opportunity), verdad (truth), ciudad (city). They’re all feminine, too.
Él / ella / usted ve: he / she sees, you (formal) see
Él ve el potencial. He sees the potential.
Ella ve el potencial. She sees the potential.
¿Usted ve el potencial? Do you see the potential? (formal)
Just take ves and drop the s: ve.
Nosotros / nosotras vemos: we see
Nosotros vemos el coche. We see the car.
Nosotras vemos el coche. We see the car. (all women)
Vosotros / vosotras veis: you all see (Spain)
¿Vosotros veis la verdad? Do you all see the truth?
¿Vosotras veis la verdad? Do you all see the truth? (all women)
Notice: veis has no tilde. Compare with hacéis or podéis: veis is just one syllable, and one-syllable words usually don’t get a tilde.
Ustedes ven: you all see
Ustedes ven la importancia. You all see the importance.
Ellos / ellas ven: they see
Ellos ven el cuadro. They see the painting.
Ellas ven la pintura. They see the painting. (all women)
Two words for “painting”: el cuadro (a framed painting on the wall) and la pintura (painting in general, and also paint).
Is ver regular or irregular?
Almost regular! The stem is just v-, and the endings are the regular -er endings from lesson 37: v-es, v-e, v-emos, v-en. The only small irregularity is yo veo: there’s an extra e (not vo). And veis loses its tilde.
Ver = to watch
In English you “see” a bird, but you “watch” TV. Spanish uses ver for both:
Veo la tele. I watch TV.
¿Vemos una película? Shall we watch a movie?
¡Nos vemos! See you!
(Wes’s tip)
¡Nos vemos! (literally “we see each other”) is one of the most common ways to say goodbye. Add a time: nos vemos mañana (see you tomorrow), nos vemos luego (see you later).
Recap: ver (to see)
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| yo veo | I see |
| tú ves | you see |
| él / ella / usted ve | he / she sees, you (formal) see |

Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between ver and mirar?
Ver is “to see” (and to watch). Mirar is “to look at”: a more active, focused looking. Veo un pájaro (I see a bird) vs ¡Mira! (Look!). We’ll come back to mirar later.
What does “a ver” mean?
“Let’s see”. You’ll hear a ver… all the time when someone is thinking or about to check something: A ver… ¿dónde está? (Let’s see… where is it?)
