Ways of transportation in Spanish: part 1

New blue vocabulary topic: ways of transportation! This topic has 2 parts. And a quick reminder: you don’t have to learn every blue lesson. If this topic is useful for you, stick around. If not, feel free to skip ahead.

Cars, bikes, boats and planes

el coche the car

el taxi the taxi

la motocicleta / la moto the motorcycle / the motorbike

la bicicleta / la bici the bicycle / the bike

el barco the boat

el avión the airplane

Just like in English, Spanish likes to shorten long words: la moto and la bici are what you’ll hear in everyday speech. And remember from lesson 30: in Latin America, a car is often el carro (or el auto in Argentina).

Public transportation

el transporte público public transportation

el tren the train

el autobús the bus

el metro the subway / the metro

The bus has a few different names depending on where you are. El autobús is understood everywhere, but you’ll also hear el bus, el camión (Mexico) and el colectivo (Argentina).

At the station

el horario the timetable

la vía the track

la vía del tren the train track

la parada the stop

la próxima parada the next stop

At a train station in Spain you might hear: El tren llega a la vía dos (The train arrives on track two). And on the bus or metro: Próxima parada… (Next stop…). We saw próxima in lesson 38.

How do you get there?

Voy al trabajo en coche. I go to work by car.

Voy en bici. I go by bike.

Voy a pie. I go on foot.

(Wes’s tip)

To say by car, bus or train, Spanish uses en: en coche, en autobús, en tren, en avión. The one exception: a pie (on foot).

Hi! I'm Wes, a Dutchie 🇳🇱 who has been living in Spain 🇪🇸 for the past few years. Just like you, I had to learn Spanish from scratch, and I searched countless places for the right info.

After filling two notebooks with words, grammar rules and notes, I figured all of this could help other learners too. That's why I created this website: to help you learn Spanish in an easy and effective way, one step at a time.

My courses focus on the Spanish spoken both in Spain 🇪🇸 as well as Latin America 🌎
