Contractions in Spanish

In this lesson, we go over ‘Contractions’ in Spanish. Spanish contractions (las contracciones) are special words formed by combining two smaller words into one, and the good news is that Spanish only has two mandatory contractions — al (a + el) and del (de + el) — so they are quick and easy to learn, yet you will use them constantly when speaking and writing Spanish.

In this lesson, we will learn how the contraction al (to the) is formed by combining the preposition a with the article el (voy al parque – I go to the park), and how del (of the / from the) is formed by combining the preposition de with the article el (vengo del trabajo – I come from work). We will also cover when these contractions are required and the few cases where they don’t apply.
